Gluten Free Mozzarella Sticks are completely at the request of my kiddos, but boy are they delicious.
Creamy melted Mozzarella, gluten free Italian breadcrumbs, and a beautiful marinara will make your belly oh so happy!
One bite of pure heaven, cheesy goodness. My kids giggled with excitement (ok not gonna lie I did too) on how delicious these were. They have not had a cheese stick in 5 years!
The crunch on these Gluten Free Mozzarella Sticks were perfection. The creamy cheese just oozed and stretch. No one would ever know the difference.
My kids thought I was the greatest thing since gluten free sliced bread! Ha :). A true mom moment for me!
I know I am not the first to discover this, but I couldn’t believe how simple this was to make. I made these in the air fryer (also have oven directions) which gave them a true fried mozzarella stick taste and texture with out the mess. Plus it is a healthier version also.
Dunk those fabulous sticks of cheese in a yummy pizza or marinara sauce and boy did we all do the happy dance around our kitchen.
These are also a perfect appetizer for your special occasions or a simple happy hour. Gluten Free Mozzarella Sticks are also a great idea for a kid allergy friendly birthday party. Such a special great treat!
I did try several different batches until I found the perfect way to protect the cheese so it didn’t just ooze out but still have the perfect outer coating and crunch.
Two secrets! Place cheese in the freezer for a bit and gluten free flour to coat the cheese stick. Such a simple process but made the best difference.
If you do not have an Air Fryer, I do have directions for the oven below!
Ok let’s get to cooking and make these delicious Gluten Free Mozzarella Sticks.
Step by step instructions
AIR FRYER DIRECTIONS:
- First unwrap all the cheese sticks and place in a glass bowl. I placed the dish in the freezer (30-60 minutes) while I was prepping the rest of the ingredients.
- You will need 3 bowls. First a bowl for the egg wash, second for the gluten free flour, and third for the gluten free Italian breadcrumbs.
- First you need to place a cheese stick in the egg wash.
- Then dip the cheese stick into the gluten free flour.
- Then back in the egg wash.
- Last step. Roll the cheese stick into the Italian Breadcrumbs.
- Place cheese stick into the air fryer and spray with olive oil.
- Repeat this process until all your cheese sticks are ready to be air fried.
- Place Air Fryer on 400 degrees for 4-5 minutes.
Tips for success
- Make sure you leave the cheese sticks stay in the freezer for a little bit. This just helps keep all the cheese inside the breading. Ideal is 30-60 minutes but if you don’t have time, you might have a little cheese spill out but not enough to really make a difference.
- I like to use Cassava flour (I find this brand in Walmart) but any gluten free 1:1 flour will work also. You just want a finely ground flour. It works to holds the cheese inside the coating.
- Any brand of gluten free Italian breadcrumbs will work. If you cannot find Italian style you can use regular gluten free breadcrumbs and add 2 teaspoons of Italian seasoning.
How to bake mozzarella sticks
- Place the cheese sticks in the freezer for at least an hour.
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Follow the instructions above.
- Make sure you slightly spray with cooking oil.
- Place the Gluten Free Mozzarella sticks on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes. Enjoy!
How to reheat and store leftovers
Store leftovers covered in the fridge for up to 4 days.
REHEATING INSTRUCTIONS:
Toaster Oven: Preheat to 350 degrees. Place Mozzarella sticks on a baking sheet with parchment paper. Heat for about 5 minutes or until it is crispy and heated all the way through.
Air Fryer: Place Mozzarella sticks back in the air fryer. Set to 400 degrees and reheat for 1 minute.
Microwave: Place Mozzarella sticks on a microwave safe plate and reheat for 30-45 seconds or until they are nice and warm.
